The test that picks who translates for us.

A concrete example of our custom web app development: a progressive testing system the Remarka group uses to select translators. Tasks that grow harder, automatic scoring, one bar to clear. We built it for the group’s translation bureau — and we use it on every project.

The problem

Anyone can say they can translate.

A translation bureau lives on the quality of the people who translate. But a résumé, a degree or a polished cover letter don’t tell you whether someone actually translates well. Taking it on trust means finding the problems once the work is already delivered — when it’s too late.

We needed a way to measure skill before handing over a project: objective, the same for everyone, and able to handle hundreds of candidates.

Our answer

A progressive test, the same for everyone.

We designed and built an online testing system: tasks that grow harder, automatic scoring and a clear bar. Those who clear it join the pool we pick from for every project; those who don’t stay out. More than 400 translators have gone through this test — and only real translators clear the bar.

Tasks that grow harder, from the basics to specialist texts
Automatic scoring on clear criteria, the same for everyone
One bar only: just 8 candidates in 100 clear it
Those who pass join the pool used for every project of the group

What we built

From application to the bar, all in one system.

01Progressive difficulty. The test starts from simple tasks and climbs: the further you go, the more specialist and tricky the texts become.
02Automatic scoring. Every answer is measured against defined criteria, without the shifting yardstick of a hand-graded judgement.
03Selection bar. A clear cut-off separates who gets in from who stays out: only 8 candidates in 100 clear it.
04Candidate log. Every attempt stays on record: who tried, how it went, who cleared the bar.
05Translator pool. Those who pass join the list the group picks its people from for every project.
06Public test page. The test is open and verifiable at moscowtrans.ru/test-perevodchika: anyone can try it.

Inside the system

The test, from the live system.

A real screen from the test: the candidate works on a text to translate, and the difficulty rises at each step.

How it works

Selecting people, not promises.

The logic is simple and strict. The test is open: anyone can start it from the public page. The tasks climb in difficulty, so a good translator stands out and someone winging it stops early. Every answer is scored automatically, with the same yardstick for everyone. At the end there’s a bar — and only 8 in 100 clear it. That filter is what keeps the quality high in every translation we deliver.

The phases

Built in phases, like every project of ours.

First the criteria, then the tasks, then the engine that scores, finally the bar and the pool. The same method we use to take clients’ projects live: foundations first, then what brings value.

01Criteria. First we defined what separates a good translation from a mediocre one, in measurable criteria.
02Progressive tasks. Then the set of tasks that grow harder, from the basics to specialist texts.
03Automatic scoring. The engine that measures every answer against the same criteria, without hand grading.
04Bar and pool. Finally the selection cut-off and the pool of translators who clear it, ready for projects.

The result

Quality begins with choosing the people.

The quality of a translation begins long before the translation: it begins with choosing who does it. This test is the first filter on every project of the group.
