Case studies / Web app · Online service
From a water lab report to the right treatment system.
The lab sends back a sheet of numbers: decimal commas, “<0,05”, “not detected”. For someone with a house on a borehole, it’s a puzzle. The client wanted an online service that reads it for them. We built Vodapas: it interprets the analysis, sizes the water-treatment system with engineering formulas and matches the equipment — and the calculation is free for the user. It’s made for houses and flats in Russia, with a focus on the Krasnodar region; the site is in Russian only.

The problem
A lab report doesn’t tell you what to install.
A laboratory report lists dozens of values, each with its own unit and its own way of being written: the decimal comma, the “less than”, the “not detected”. For an engineer it’s working material; for a homeowner it’s a sheet of paper with no obvious next step. And the real question — which system do I need, and what will it cost me over the years — goes unanswered.
The client wanted that step to be taken by a calculation, not by a hunch: a service that reads the analysis, explains what it found, says plainly what’s missing, and ends with a properly sized system and specific equipment you can order.
Our answer
A calculation engine that shows its working.
We built Vodapas around a calculation engine kept separate from the website: it takes the 28 parameters of the analysis, computes the scaling and corrosion indices, applies the safety rules and sizes the system. What comes out is a “water passport” where every line says where its number came from, with three system variants and the total cost of ownership over the years.
The calculation engine · the water passport
It reads the report the way the lab writes it.
Labs don’t all write their values the same way: “<0,05”, a comma instead of a decimal point, “not detected”. The engine brings them to a single form before doing any maths, then works through the 28 water parameters. It computes the indices that show whether the water tends to scale or to corrode — Langelier, Ryznar, Puckorius, Larson–Skold — and runs the analysis past 18 safety rules. Some of them are hard stops: a borehole analysis without microbiology isn’t accepted as complete. Better to say what’s missing than to calculate on half an analysis.

Example: a 42-metre borehole in Krasnodar’s Prikubansky district. Each parameter is expressed as a multiple of its limit, so all of them sit on one scale: iron is 5.7 times over, and five of the thirteen are above the limit.
Simulators and tools
Learn the control valve on screen.
A treatment system is run from a control valve, and every model has its own logic. Vodapas has 8 interactive simulators of valves and devices: the user presses the buttons on screen and learns to operate them before ever standing in front of one. Next to them sit the tools for anyone who wants to run the numbers themselves.

The tools
Real lab reports · catalogue and orders
Examples from real lab reports, and orders a person confirms.
To show what the engine actually does, Vodapas publishes 4 breakdowns of real laboratory reports, each one next to a fragment of the original lab form: you see the number on the sheet and what the calculation makes of it. From the calculation you move on to the catalogue — and an order never charges anything automatically: an operator confirms it.

How it’s built
The calculation lives in the link, not in a database.
There’s no database for the calculations: the whole state of a calculation sits in the page address. So a result is a link you can send to anyone, and the page opens even with JavaScript switched off. The engine is a separate set of pure functions with no dependencies, checked by 123 automated tests that all pass. Built in about a month, between 18 August and 16 September 2026.
We measured speed in the lab — slow 4G, CPU slowed down 4×, local build: LCP dropped from 13.5 to 1.0 seconds, FCP from 13.1 to 0.85. That’s a lab measurement, not data collected from real visitors.
The result
An engineering calculation, free and in one link.

LCP in a lab measurement (slow 4G, 4× CPU slowdown): down from 13.5 s
