Fluent ли?

Case studies / Telegram Mini App · Edtech

Speak, slip up, understand why — inside Telegram.

Fluent ли? is a speaking-practice trainer for Russian speakers learning English or Italian: a Telegram Mini App with its own bot. You talk out loud with a tutor, inside a scenario; when the conversation ends, a debrief in Russian explains your mistakes, and the mistake cards come back at intervals through spaced repetition. A Remarka group project — a group that has worked with languages since 2001. The first working version took six days.

The problem

Understanding a language isn’t the same as speaking it.

You can read, understand, do the grammar drills — and still freeze the moment you have to open your mouth. Getting past that takes speaking practice, and on your own it isn’t easy to come by.

Then there’s the mother tongue. Russian speakers trip over typical mistakes that come straight from Russian; a generic explanation, written in the very language you’re still learning, can easily land only halfway. The Remarka group has worked with languages since 2001, as a translation bureau — this project comes out of the same house.

Our answer

Speak out loud, then understand the mistake in Russian.

We built a trainer that gets people talking. You pick a scenario and hold a spoken conversation with a tutor: speech recognition listens, the tutor replies, speech synthesis gives it a voice. When the conversation is over, the debrief arrives, in Russian — but before the explanation comes a question: “why is this wrong?”. The learner thinks it through first, and only then reads.

✓Spoken conversation in scenarios, with a “what to say?” hint
✓A debrief in Russian: the mistake explained in the learner’s own language
✓A bank of typical Russian-speaker mistakes: 36 rules for English, 32 for Italian
✓All inside Telegram: it opens from the bot, with nothing to install

Conversation and debrief

You think first, then the explanation arrives.

The conversation is the heart of the product; the debrief is where you take stock. The order is deliberate: first the learner tries to explain their own mistake, choosing between three answers, and only then does the explanation in Russian appear. Think first, read second — rather than scrolling past a list of corrections.

01A scenario, out loud. Speech recognition, the tutor’s reply, a synthesised voice: a spoken conversation inside a given situation, not a quiz to click through.
02“What to say?” When the sentence won’t come, the hint is right there on the conversation screen.
03“Why is this wrong?” In the debrief, a question with three options: the learner chooses before reading the explanation.
04The explanation, in Russian. The mistake explained in the learner’s language, not the one they’re still learning. The whole interface is in Russian.

The Fluent ли? lessons screen: today’s topic (voiced and voiceless s and z) and the choice of when mistakes get corrected — gently, straight away or after the conversation

Before speaking, the learner picks when to be corrected: gently, straight away or after. With ‘after’, the tutor does not interrupt and the whole debrief waits until the end.

Mistake bank · review

Typical mistakes become cards to review.

The product carries a bank of typical Russian-speaker mistakes: 36 rules for English, 32 for Italian. Cards are reviewed with spaced repetition, using the FSRS algorithm: four grades, and every button already shows when the card will come back — before you press it, not after. And so nobody starts from a blank slate, an adaptive placement test creates the first cards straight away.

The Fluent ли? mistake bank before the first lesson: the Mistakes and Words tabs, the ‘Empty for now’ note and the button to start a lesson

A new learner’s mistake bank: empty for now — the cards will come from their own mistakes after the first lesson.

01Typical mistakes, catalogued. 36 rules for English and 32 for Italian, built around people coming from Russian.
02Four grades, interval in sight. Again, Hard, Good, Easy: each button shows when the card will return before it’s pressed.
03FSRS spaced repetition. The algorithm decides when to bring each card back, based on the grade given.
04A “ladder” placement test. An adaptive test that runs without the AI model; its results create the first mistake cards straight away.

How it’s built

A tab in Telegram, a complete application behind it.

To the learner, Fluent ли? opens from the bot like any other Mini App. Behind it sits a real application: an interface designed for the phone, a server with its own database, the bot, payments and reminders. The first working version was built in six days, 13–18 August 2026.

Mini AppA React interface: 16 screens, designed for the phone first
ServerA Node (Fastify) API and a PostgreSQL database, with the Telegram bot alongside
VoiceSpeech recognition, the tutor’s reply, a synthesised voice
DemoA demo mode that runs without any external keys
Sign-inThe sign-in data Telegram signs is verified on the server
PaymentsIn Telegram Stars, with refunds supported
RemindersSent at the learner’s local time, not the server’s
HostingContainerised, in an EU data centre, over HTTP/3; the Mini App can only be embedded inside Telegram

The result

A real product, already in testing on Telegram.
